HPCSA to proceed with inquiry against Wouter Basson
I have been watching with interest the case between Wouter Basson and the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The HPCSA has been attempting to carry out an inquiry into Basson’s conduct for a number of years – still a practicing cardiologist, he also became known as “Dr Death” for his role in chemical and biological warfare development for the South African National Defence Force under the apartheid government.
On Monday, the high court ruled in favour of the HPCSA, allowing the Council to proceed with the inquiry into charges of “unethical and/or unprofessional conduct pertaining to alleged human rights violations”. According to a press release by the HPCSA, Basson’s high court application challenged the inquiry on the grounds that it was “unlawful, unreasonable and unfair”, but Judge Eberhard Bertelsmann dismissed the suggestion of prejudice against Basson on the part of the Council.
