Fanie du Toit speaks at the Transformation Audit launch.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison – an enormous victory for peace, democracy, and nation-building in South Africa.

The last 20 years have indeed seen immense political and social change across the country, even beyond what many South Africans may have imagined on 11 February 1990.

But as IJR Executive Director Fanie du Toit commented last night at the launch of the Transformation Audit in Cape Town, many South Africans are still excluded from the country’s economic transformation processes.

“A vast transformation process has occurred, and it went off relatively peacefully,” said du Toit. However, he added, “the social fruits of that have not been tasted to the extent that it’s sufficient for South Africans to feel happy about it.” (Read the Bloomberg report here)

Remember where you were when Nelson Mandela was released?

How far do you feel South Africa come in the transformation process, and what work remains to be done?
